The conflict between the U.S. and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) in one of the crises defining our time and a burning hot spot in the present international political situation. However, the roots of the present conflict are going back to 1945, and the "North Korea Crisis" is far more than a security related issue; it is also a social and economic issue. Despite the imminent dangers on the Korean Peninsula, only vague information and few facts exist about North Korea and the complex interrelations in the North East Asian region.

In view of this discrepancy, it is a very urgent task to provide profound information about the social, economic and political development of the DPRK and the related situation in North East Asia.

Therefore, the Korea Association (Korea Verband e.V.) and the Korea Institute at Ruhr-University Bochum organize a one-week block seminar given by Prof. Bruce Cumings (University of Chicago), one of the leading Korea Experts in the field.

The seminar (held in English) will shed light on the historical origins and the development of North Korea and examine the role of the state, the party and the military. It will also deal with current events and developments, e.g. North Korea's relations with the major players in North East Asia, and the implications of the nuclear and economic crisis.

The seminar addresses students, researchers, journalists and other professionals with academic qualification working in a field related to Korea. The seminar will be held from February 12th to February 16th 2007. Students will be credited with 3 ECTS credits for participation when fulfilling reading and homework requirements. The seminar will take place at the Ruhr-University Bochum, Universitätsstraße 150, Building GB. The exact place will be communicated to accepted participants.

The number of participants is limited to 30. Please send your application for participation, stating academic or professional status (for students: field of study, number of semesters) and motivation for participation, until January 6th 2007 to:
