The talk “Living in between: a combination of thoughts about ‘model minority’, immigration and racism” combines these topics having as a departure point the speaker’s personal experience being an Asian woman with Japanese ancestry and Brazilian nationality. This remains not restricted to her life, but through it, is expanded to these broader themes, having in mind the rise of an anti-Asian racism during the pandemic.

About Fernanda Sumita

Fernanda Sumita comes from Brasil, São Paulo and studies Theater Studies and Social and Cultural Anthropology at the Free University of Berlin. As part of the un.thai.tled Film Festival with the support of bi’bak Berlin, a collective that focuses on transnational narratives, she could participate in a program for BIPoC and made with two other collaborators the short feature film „Curupira“ in 2020. She was an intern at the Berlinale and her article „Yellow Lives for Black Lives“, which focused on her Asian ancestry and the term ‚model minority‘, was also published in the online version of the newspaper Le Monde Diplomatique. As a performer and actress, she tries to reflect on issues of race, gender and non-belonging in her work and process. Her latest role was as a Brazilian immigrant in the short movie „Uma Hora ou Outra/Irgendwann“.

Der Vortrag „Living in between: a combination of thoughts about ‚model minority‘, immigration and racism“ (Dazwischen leben: eine Kombination von Gedanken über ‚model minority‘, Immigration und Rassismus) kombiniert diese Themen, wobei die persönliche Erfahrung der Referentin, einer Asiatin mit japanischen Vorfahren und brasilianischer Staatsangehörigkeit, als Ausgangspunkt dient. Diese bleibt nicht auf ihr Leben beschränkt, sondern wird durch sie auf diese umfassenderen Themen ausgeweitet, mit Blick auf das Aufkommen eines anti-asiatischen Rassismus während der Pandemie.

Über Fernanda Sumita

Fernanda Sumita kommt aus Brasilien, São Paulo und studiert Theaterwissenschaft und Sozial- und Kulturanthropologie an der Freien Universität Berlin. Im Rahmen des un.thai.tled Filmfestivals mit Unterstützung von bi’bak Berlin, einem Kollektiv, das sich auf transnationale Narrative konzentriert, konnte sie an einem Programm für BIPoC teilnehmen und drehte 2020 mit zwei weiteren Mitarbeiter*innen den Kurzspielfilm „Curupira“. Sie war Praktikantin bei der Berlinale und ihr Artikel „Yellow Lives for Black Lives“, in dem es um ihre asiatische Abstammung und den Begriff „Modell-Minority“ ging, wurde auch in der Online-Version der Zeitung Le Monde Diplomatique veröffentlicht. Als Performerin und Schauspielerin versucht sie, in ihrer Arbeit Fragen des Rassismus, des Geschlechts und der Nicht-Zugehörigkeit zu reflektieren. Ihre letzte Rolle war die einer brasilianischen Einwanderin in dem Kurzfilm „Uma Hora ou Outra/Irgendwann“.
